Fasting is a practise that frees us from the chains of this world, allowing us to hunger more freely for God
March 7
In biblical tradition, fasting is a spiritual discipline designed to draw believers closer to God through prayer, repentance, and self-denial. Seen as a means of seeking divine guidance or expressing sorrow for sin, it is exemplified in Jesus’ 40-day fast in the wilderness (Matthew 4:1-2). In the Old Testament, fasting is also portrayed as a communal practice, such as in the Book of Esther, where Queen Esther calls for a fast to seek God's intervention before approaching the king to save the Jewish people (Esther 4:16). This act underscores fasting's role in times of crisis, emphasizing reliance on divine power.
Biblical fasting is more than the mere abstention from food; it is a means of spiritual alignment and renewal. In Isaiah 58, the prophet challenges superficial fasting, urging it to be accompanied by acts of justice and compassion. The practice of Lent in Christianity, which mirrors Jesus' 40 days of fasting, serves as a modern reflection of this biblical tradition, inviting believers to observe a period of penance, prayer, and reflection in preparation for Easter. Lent continues the biblical call for fasting to foster humility, deepen one's relationship with God, and inspire spiritual transformation.
Below are some ways you can participate in The Lent Journey with the Northeastern Seminary & Roberts Wesleyan Community.

Prayer
Ask and Reflect
Almighty and everliving God, in your tender love for the human race you sent your Son our Savior Jesus Christ to take upon him our nature, and to suffer death upon the cross, giving us the example of his great humility: Mercifully grant that we may walk in the way of his suffering, and also share in his resurrection; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. - The Book of Common Prayer

Active Reflection
Take Action
Today, fast a meal. Reflect on the first time Jesus told His disciples of His upcoming death. Read Rev 22:1-17. Reflect on the wedding supper of the Lamb
*Please note: We recommend consulting with your doctor or healthcare provider before beginning any fasting regimen, especially if you have underlying health conditions or concerns. Fasting may not be suitable for everyone, and it's important to prioritize your health and well-being.
